CONSTRUYE COLOMBIA 2019
Construye Colombia identifies and supports communitary development initiatives commited to the improvement of living conditions and the preservation of the inmaterial patrimony of different communities in Colombia. We seek to contribute to the strengthening of the local identity and create platforms for the exchange of current knowledge.
The Colombian Pacífic
The Colombian Pacific is one of the most diverse regions of Colombia. It consists of a long strip of territory with the pacific coast on one side (from the border with Ecuador to the border with Panama) and the western mountain ridge (one of the three main Andean mpuntain ridges of Colombia) on the other side. It’s an incredibly biodiverse region, compromising hundreds of thousands of square kms. of pristine tropical rainforests. This forests harbor both exhuberant and fragile ecosystems, like the mangrove, where a bunch of endemic species of plants, animals and other forms of life cohabit.
Cultural diversity is also something special about this territory since both native indigineous people and afro-Colombian communities have deep cultural roots that link them to their land and traditions. Culinary is one of it´s most promoted traditional practices, nonetheless other arts and crafts are absolutely inhenerent to Pacifican culture, such as traditional fishing, traditional weaving and traditional music (including vocal and instrumental techniques).
The Colombian Pacific has been a region historically affected by poverty, violence and governmental indifference, however it´s currently struggling to become a referent for traditional cultural and ecological awareness. That´s why ORGANIZMO Foundation and Colombia Construye have decided to work in the region with different local allies.
What are our main goals for this year?
This year we´ll be building and working in the Center for Pacific Culture (Centro de Cultura Pacífica CCP) located in Arusí, Chocó, where we’ll gather among an learn from local masters. For 7 days we’ll experience an immersion in communitary life and traditional arts and crafts of the colombian Pacific región. With your support it will be possible to build Center for Pacific Culture and finance it´s first semester of existence.
We´ll also visit and learn about other innovative projects that focus as well on strengthening local identity, like the Museum of Local Knowledge of Coqui (Museo de Saberes Locales de Coquí).
What are we going to learn?
During this immersion experience we´ll support the building and opening of the Center for Pacific Culture, all with local construction techniques and alternative technologies. An experiential journey through the crafts of the Colombian Pacific region:
We´ll focus on building a set of composting toilets using local wood varieties: choiba, carreto, guayacan, among others. We´ll also learn about roof weaving with the leaves of palma amarga and jícara.
We´ll build Zoteas, or suspended gardening system of local medicinal and edible plants. We´ll also plant seedbeds for the recovery and further spreading of threaghtened native wood species
LOCAL ARTS AND CRAFTS
We´ll learn about local techniques used for fishing, cooking, weaving, and using medicinal plants. We’ll be accompanied by the wisemen from the area, thus materializaing a platform of knowledge exchange, a living classroom focused on the strengthening of Pacific culture, a cultural immersion with social impact.
